The Florida Department of Health fined Leon County over $3.5 million for enforcing a vaccine mandate, which is illegal in Florida. The county fired over a dozen workers for refusing to show proof of receiving a COVID-19 vaccine last week. The State of Florida then sent a letter to Leon County administrator Vincent Long on Wednesday, which alerted him that the county has been found to have violated state law 714 times, and would be fined $3.57 million as a result. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis spoke out against Leon County's decision to fire employees who refused to show proof of a COVID vaccine, saying this: “We are going to protect Florida jobs. We are not going to let people be fired because of a vaccine mandate. You don’t just cast aside people who’ve been serving faithfully over this issue over, what’s basically a personal choice on their individual health. We cannot let these folks be cast aside. We cannot allow their jobs to be destroyed and their families and livelihoods, potentially, to be destroyed as well." In May, DeSantis signed legislation barring businesses and government entities from mandating COVID vaccines for staff. The plan of this legislation was to halt the possibility of a "vaccine passport" in Florida. Texas Governor Greg Abbott also put into effect a similar order on Monday. This comes as the Biden administration continues to push for vaccine mandates in the private sector.
