Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller, a U.S. Marine Corps officer who went viral last month for slamming military leaders over the botched Afghanistan withdrawal, has been arrested and is being held in military lockup, according to his father.
Lt. Col. Scheller came into the public's eye after he published a Facebook video where he called for U.S. military leaders to take accountability for their actions in Afghanistan. He chastised their failures and requested that they apologize for the failed strategies that led to the deaths of 13 American soldiers. Following his statements, Scheller announced that he would be resigning from his position. One day later, he was relieved of his duties. Not long after, he shared that he had been ordered to undergo mental health tests. On Monday, however, his father told Task and Purpose that he is now in the brig. He also said that his son is expected to appear before a military hearing on Thursday. “They had a gag order on him and asked him not to speak. He did, and they incarcerated him. They don’t know what to do with him.” -Scheller Sr. Scheller Sr. stood up for his son, saying: “All our son did is ask the questions that everybody was asking themselves, but they were too scared to speak out loud. He was asking for accountability. In fact, I think he even asked for an apology that we made mistakes, but they couldn’t do that, which is mind-blowing."
Following the release of Task and Purpose's initial story, the Marine Corps confirmed in a statement that Scheller had been taken to the brig. Read below:
“Lt. Col. Stuart Scheller Jr. is currently in pre-trial confinement in the Regional Brig for Marine Corps Installations East aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune pending an Article 32 preliminary hearing. The time, date, and location of the proceedings have not been determined. Lt. Col. Scheller will be afforded all due process." -Capt. Sam Stephenson, a spokesman for Training and Education Command. Watch Lt. Col. Scheller's original video below: Since the release of his first video, Scheller has been met with large amounts of support for standing up and calling out the actions of the military leaders. Scheller is a Marine Corps veteran of 17 years, and he was still very active as a Marine. He planned to remain active until his resignation was complete.
