Credit to Them
Article by Haddon Lockyer
On Monday, Texas state legislator Bryan Slaton announced that he would be introducing a bill that would ban "drag shows" that involved (or permitted the entry of) children across the Lone Star State.
Rep. Slaton (R) announced his plans via a statement posted to his social media accounts, saying: “As a father or two young children, I would never take my children to a drag show and I know Speaker Dade Phelan and the rest of my Republican colleagues wouldn’t either.”
Slaton's statement came just two days after a "gay bar" in Dallas, TX, hosted a "family-friendly" drag show marketed towards children. Titled "Drag Kids To Pride," the show consisted of biological males dressed as females in inappropriate outfits, dancing while taking money from the outstretched hands of minors. Due to The Informed Youth's Policy Regarding Vulgarity, we have not shared the full video. A screencap from the event, however, is below.
As photos and videos taken at the event were spread online, bipartisan outrage across the country grew. In fact, protesters had gathered outside the Dallas bar before the event had even concluded. As they protested, they accused the bar of "grooming children."
After the event, the group Protect Texas Kids took credit for organizing the protests outside the bar. In a statement, the group stated that police had entered the bar during the event and removed all children and their families. "The mission was to raise awareness that an event like this, a drag show for children, was happening right in Dallas. We also hoped that if we raised awareness, the event might be canceled or modified so that children couldn’t be present."
Seeming to contradict Protect Texas Kids's statement, Dallas police said that they had mainly assisted with "crowd control."
One of the protesters, who referred to herself only as "Dasy" to ABC8, claimed that she had seen the event advertised on a poster near her home in Dallas. She said, "I don't believe that I should be seeing signs advertising for children to be dancing on stage with men... and in inappropriate clothing and makeup. I do not in any way condone the behavior that these people are engaging in, but what drags me out here is its kids now." Under Texas law, the exploitation of children is a felony. The fact that we need a law for this doesn’t bode well for the future of this country
