New figures are showing that 54% of all hospitalized COVID patients in the country of Ireland during August were fully vaccinated, according to an Irish Times report. On top of that, one-sixth of Irish COVID deaths since April have been categorized as "breakthrough cases," meaning that the patients were fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. One-fourth of ICU admissions were also vaccinated people. At the end of August, the data was available for 311 out of 323 patients that were in the hospital at that time. The specific data was as follows:
Data for the ICU is as follows:
The data comes from Health Service Executive, an Irish government branch monitoring hospital data. HSE chief clinical officer Dr. Colm Henry blamed the rise in breakthrough cases on the rise in vaccinations, saying this: “The rise in vaccinated patients in hospital is not a surprise as more and more people have been vaccinated. Vaccines were never going to be 100 per cent effective against infection; their big contribution is in preventing serious illness.” This comes as countries all over the world face a large increase in COVID cases, despite high vaccinations. For example, 90% of the population in Israel is vaccinated, but they recently experienced the highest amount of new cases over the span of one day since the beginning of the pandemic.
