On Monday, U.S. President Joe Biden (D) signed a bill ending the COVID-19 emergency declaration, over three years after the "two weeks to slow the spread" began under President Donald Trump's (R) administration.
H.J. Resolution 7, which effectively ends the federal emergency declarations regarding the coronavirus, made its way to Biden's desk after making it through the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. However, despite falling COVID cases and increased immunity across the country, nearly 200 House Democrats still voted against the resolution. The resolution passed the Senate with ease: The vote was 68-23. In an extremely short press release, the White House said: “The President signed into law: H.J.Res. 7, which terminates the national emergency related to the COVID-19 pandemic."
Earlier this year, the Biden administration stated that they hoped to extend the declaration one more time, allowing it to end on May 11th. The GOP-led House, however, forced Biden's hand by putting H.J.Res. 7 on his desk. Representative Paul Gosar (R-AZ) drafted the resolution.

The federal government - especially Biden - has been criticized for repeatedly extending the declaration, which many Americans saw as restrictive and anti-freedom. The order led to lockdowns, unconstitutional mask & vaccine mandates, the shuttering of businesses across the country, and the weakening of the economy. The removal of the order marks the end of certain federal waivers for Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP. Experts say, however, that the end of the declaration will have little effect on Americans.
