On Sunday, participants and organizers at the Freedom Convoy 2022 held their first official press conference since rolling into Ottawa, the capital of Canada, last week. The Convoy, which is made up of thousands of drivers and vehicles, is protesting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's COVID mandates that have plagued the country since early 2020. Participants are determined to remain in Ottawa for as long as it takes until Trudeau ends the mandates, with some drivers claiming that they have funds to remain for years, if necessary. During the first press conference, organizers Tamara Lich, Benjamin Dichter, and Chris Barber slammed the mainstream media's coverage of the event and only answered questions from independent journalists. Mainstream Canadian networks, like CBC, have been falsely reporting on violence and vandalism during the protests, while also understating the number of demonstrators. The network then spread rumors about the Convoy's GoFundMe. Organizer Benjamin Dichter told reporters: "This is also why we omitted certain news agencies from this press conference, including the Toronto Star and the CBC who are banned from this press conference. And the reason they were banned is twofold. First, this entire week the CBC, Toronto Star – Yahoo News were retweeting and reposting with a few others – kept putting stories out that our GoFundMe was frozen or suspended because of nefarious reasons. You know 'right-wing truckers,' 'dangerous people,' and it was hysterical, me and Tamara were talking." Almost $10 million has been raised via the GoFundMe. Over 113,000 donations have been made. Dichter continued: “That was purely, purely just a fake story. Was that a fake story to sabotage the donations that were coming in? Probably. You see a lot of that propaganda in the media. And then when the Toronto Star put that cartoon that Jordan Peterson put up, that sort of extremism we’re not gonna tolerate.” The cartoon that Dichter is referencing is below: Finishing up, Dichter said: “So we know if we had invited the Toronto Star, CBC, all of these mainstream news organizations they will do what they always do. … They’ll come in with five people and they will have these giant cameras and they’ll take up half the floor space and bully everybody else. That is not what this is about; this is about us coming together, talking to one another, answering any questions that you have. If we have the answer we will tell you, if we don’t have the answer we will tell you ‘we don’t know’ and just have a nice conversation with each other and go from there.” Watch the press conference here. Protesters are expected to remain in Ottawa until further notice. Meanwhile, Trudeau and his family have fled from their Ottawa home and have hidden in a "secret location." Some suspect that Trudeau might have crossed the border into the United States, while others believe that he could be in Cuba.
