Rochelle Walensky, who directed the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) during the COVID-19 pandemic, announced her exit from the organization Friday in a letter to U.S. President Joe Biden.
Walensky, who has been criticized for the actions the CDC took during the pandemic, caught the medical world off-guard with her announcement. She cited the end of the coronavirus global health emergency as the reason for her unexpected exit. Announcing her leave, Walensky wrote: “The end of the COVID-19 public health emergency marks a tremendous transition for our country, for public health, and in my tenure as CDC Director. I took on this role, at your request, with the goal of leaving behind the dark days of the pandemic and moving CDC – and public health – forward into a much better and more trusted place."
In response, President Biden (D) praised Walensky for her work.
“Dr. Walensky has saved lives with her steadfast and unwavering focus on the health of every American. As Director of the CDC, she led a complex organization on the front lines of a once-in-a-generation pandemic with honesty and integrity. Dr. Walensky leaves CDC a stronger institution, better positioned to confront health threats and protect Americans. We have all benefited from her service and dedication to public health, and I wish her the best in the next chapter.”

Many Americans disapproved of the CDC's strict coronavirus restrictions during the pandemic, with the organizations attempt to push vaccine mandates only making Walensky that much more of a polarized figure. Dr. Kevin Bass shared a video compilation of Walensky's "lies" during the pandemic, saying, "We deserved better than Rochelle Walensky."
Representative Thomas Massie (R-KY) stated that Walensky's resignation was "long overdue."
Walensky's last day in office will be June 30th. Have comments? Share them below. Recently, The Informed Youth announced our Insiders initiative.
