Twitter, under the direction of new CEO Elon Musk, has disbanded its infamous "Trust and Safety Council" as Musk works to restore free speech to the social media giant. The group, which consisted of approximately 100 human rights activists & hate speech experts, was scheduled to meet with Twitter higher-ups Monday evening. Shortly before the meeting was to take place, however, the council members were informed that the group would be dissolved. According to the Associated Press, the advisors received an email from Twitter that read: “Our work to make Twitter a safe, informative place will be moving faster and more aggressively than ever before and we will continue to welcome your ideas going forward about how to achieve this goal." The email added that Twitter is “reevaluating how best to bring external insights” and that the council is “not the best structure to do this.” While the council had no power over decisions & didn't deal with specific content disputes, they were tasked with helping to stop child exploitation. Unfortunately, child exploitation was rampant under the leadership of Jack Dorsey, Yoel Roth, and Vijaya Gadde. Musk has greatly criticized Twitter's failure to stop the exploitation, and likely grew unhappy with the council's lack of results.
Credit to CNN The removal of the council is just the latest in a series of major changes to Twitter under Musk's leadership. Likewise, Musk has introduced his strategy to the platform: users over experts. Since taking over, Musk has polled his 120 million followers regarding major content decisions, which has led him to restore many major banned accounts, including that of Former President Donald Trump.
