On Saturday, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said during an interview that racism is to blame for "black and brown" Americans dying in car accidents.
Speaking on MSNBC's "PoliticsNation," Buttigieg stated that the demographics of road-related fatalities are “comparable to gun violence, and we see a lot of racial disparities.” Buttigieg went on to cite "discrimination" and "even the ways that roads are designed and built" for the difference in the number of roadway fatalities for race. He said: "It’s something that deserves more attention, which is why I’m working to bring more attention to it. We have a crisis when it comes to roadway fatalities in America. We lose about 40,000 people every year. It’s a level that is comparable to gun violence. And we see a lot of racial disparities. Black and brown Americans, tribal citizens, and rural residents are much more likely to lose their lives whether it’s in a car or as a pedestrian being hit by a car."
Buttigieg made the statements to "PoliticsNation" host Al Sharpton.

In 2022, Buttigieg launched a billion-dollar "Reconnecting Communities" program in an attempt to infuse racial equity into U.S. infrastructure. Buttigieg's work as transportation secretary has been heavily criticized across the political spectrum, as his failure to properly handle the train derailment in East Palestine, OH, in February led to the leakage of gallons of chemicals into the town's soil and waterways. Buttigieg ran for president in 2020 against then-candidates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. However, he dropped out as the race neared its end, endorsing Biden. After the election, Buttigieg was named transportation secretary. Prior to his position in the Biden administration, Buttigieg served as the 32nd mayor of South Bend, Indiana. Have comments?
