Over two million people fled big cities between 2020 and 2022 amid COVID-19 restrictions and rising crime, according to a new report from the Economic Innovation Group. 2021 saw 1.2 million people leaving large urban counties across the country, while 2022 saw another 861,000 citizens leave the cities. On the flip side, suburbs & exurbs saw large population increases: 931,000 in 2021 and 832,000 in 2022. As for those moving into urban areas and cities in 2021 & 2022, 693,000 were international immigrants. City residents saw the most restrictive COVID-19 lockdown policies, which hurt urban economies and lifestyles. Also, the rising crime rates in cities nationwide have likely contributed to the exiting citizens. To make matters worse, supply chain blockages and the low labor force led to an increase in the price of home construction in residential areas. The Daily Wire noted: "Median home sale prices increased from $322,600 in the second quarter of 2020 to $467,700 in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to data from the Department of Housing and Urban Development."

Florida, Arizona, Texas) saw the largest growth, while Democrat-run cities (ie. New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago) saw the biggest declines. Los Angeles County lost more people than any other county in the nation, losing 91,000 residents, according to the Census Bureau. The news comes as California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) goes on a red-state tour to tout his "successes." Many suspect Newsom may run for the presidency in 2024. Have comments? Share them below.
