On Tuesday evening, former Fox News host Tucker Carlson teased his upcoming plans for the first time in a video posted on Twitter. In the video, Carlson praised Twitter as one of the few platforms left "that allow free speech."
In the clip, Carlson, who boasts over 7.2 million followers on Twitter, announced that he would be re-launching his extremely successful primetime show, "Tucker Carlson Tonight," on the platform. Carlson hosted the show for nearly 6 and a half years for Fox News, and, prior to his ousting from the network late last month, he frequently topped ratings with an average of 3 million nightly viewers. In the video, Carlson said: "The last big one [free-speech platform] remaining in the world, the only one, is Twitter, where we are now."
Carlson's announcement was widely shared and quickly went viral. At the time of this writing, his Tweet has been seen over 92 million times.

Some of Carlson's supporters who don't use Twitter expressed disappointment over the announcement. But behind Carlson's move to Twitter is an excellent strategy that benefits everyone but Fox News. Shortly after news broke that Carlson would be leaving Fox News, many wondered whether or not the conservative firebrand would move to another network. However, it has since been revealed that Carlson is locked into a $20 million a year contract with Fox News until 2025. That contract prevents Carlson from joining another network until it expires. At first, it seemed that Carlson's former employer was attempting to use the contract to sideline him until after the 2024 election. However, the host's decision to start broadcasting a Twitter version of the show allows him to continue his reporting without joining a new network. In short, by broadcasting on Twitter, Carlson will continue to receive $20 million a year from Fox Media, while still being able to speak his mind freely. And Fox Media will not be able to do anything but watch and pay the host, unless they break the contract on their end.

Since Tesla CEO & free speech advocate Elon Musk purchased Twitter last year, conservative journalists looking to share their reports without threats of censorship have been flocking to Twitter by the thousands. After Carlson's video was published last night, Musk said: "On this platform, unlike the one-way street of broadcast, people are able to interact, critique and refute whatever is said. And, of course, anything misleading will get @CommunityNotes."
