Credit to The San Francisco Chronicle Article by Haddon Lockyer On Friday, the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives voted to pass legislation that will ban "assault weapons" if making it through the Senate. The House was closely split over the bill, with the final vote being 217-213. Shockingly, however, multiple Republicans voted against their party to side with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D) by supporting the bill. GOP Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick (PA) and Chris Jacobs (NY) both voted against party lines in support of the ban. Jacobs, a well-known "anti-Trump Republican," is still serving his first term in office. Shortly after revealing that he would be supporting the bill, Jacobs announced that he would not seek reelection. Fitzpatrick, on the other hand, is much less known by the general public and often stays with his party on most votes. Speaking to Fox News's Brian Kilmeade in June, however, Fitzpatrick expressed his support for tougher gun legislation. While Fitzpatrick and Jacobs both made news for defying their fellow Republicans by supporting the anti-2nd Amendment bill, they weren't the only ones to vote against their party's wishes. Five different Democrats, who saw the legislation as a threat to the constitutional right to bear arms, sided with Republicans in a vote against the bill. These Democrats include: Henry Cuellar (TX), Jared Golden (ME), Vicente Gonzalez (TX), Ron Kind (WI), and Kurt Schrader (OR). Rep. Fitzpatrick Credit to NPR
Rep. Jacobs Credit to the New York Post Even with the Democrats' victory in the House, the bill will almost certainly die in the Senate, as 10 Republican votes are needed for the Democrats to overcome the GOP filibuster. This comes as conservative Republicans head into the midterms prepared to take back control of the House and Senate, kicking out all "Republicans In Name Only" such as Fitzpatrick and Jacobs.
