Utah Republican State Senator Mike Kennedy's home in Salt Lake City was vandalized with threatening pro-trans messages last week after he sponsored a bill banning medical sex changes for minors. Lone Peak police officers were called about the vandalism at about 7:30 A.M. on Friday, according to CNN. According to Kennedy's Facebook post about the incident, the vandals wrote, "FASH," on his garage door with red spray paint. The criminals also left a veiled threat on Kennedy's home, writing, "These trannies bash back." In the post, Kennedy shared an image of the damage to his home. Credit to The Post Millennial Kennedy spoke strongly against the "radicals" who attacked his home. He told his supporters: "To those who seek to use violence, vandalism, and intimidation to deter me from standing up for what is right, let me be clear: you will not succeed. I will not be deterred by your cowardly actions. The recent vandalism to my family's home was not just an attack on me, but on the very principles our state stands for. We will not let fear and violence control our destiny. As Utahns, we will always stand up and push back against radicals who seek to push their agenda in our state. I am more determined than ever to work with the good people of Utah to make our state a better place for all, especially our children, and I won't back down."
The vandalism at Kennedy's home comes after the state senator sponsored SB16, a bill that banned transgender surgeries for children in the state of Utah. The bill made it through state legislature and was signed into law by Governor Spencer Cox in January. At the time Cox praised Kennedy's "nuanced and thoughtful approach" to the ban in a statement. He said: "Legislation that impacts our most vulnerable youth requires careful consideration and deliberation. While not a perfect bill, we are grateful for Sen. Kennedy’s more nuanced and thoughtful approach to this terribly divisive issue. More and more experts, states and countries around the world are pausing these permanent and life-altering treatments for new patients until more and better research can help determine the long-term consequences." Credit to CNN While police have not made clear whether or not they know who is responsible for the crime, they did claim that the Kennedy's sponsorship of SB16 likely served as motivation for the perpetrator(s). Investigators, with Detective Melissa Fahrni, said: "The suspects appear to have targeted the Senator based on legislation that recently passed in the last legislative session."
Utah is just one of several states that have passed legislation against irreversible gender surgeries for minors. Other states with similar laws include Georgia, Iowa, and Tennessee. Have comments?
