On Friday evening, during the release of the first "Twitter Files," journalist Matt Taibbi revealed that Biden administration officials ordered Twitter staffers to remove tweets that they disliked.
Taibbi dropped many bombs in the 42-tweet thread. However, one of the biggest reveals was the involvement of government officials in the censoring of Twitter users. According to Taibbi, government officials on both sides of the political aisle requested that tweets be removed. Requests from the left, however, were almost always approved, whereas requests from the right were much less likely to be answered.
In the thread, Taibbi gave specific examples of instances when the Biden administration asked for the removal of certain tweets. The requests were promptly responded to, with Twitter employees telling Biden officials that they "handled" them. The Democratic National Committee were also spotted asking for bans in the internal messages. Taibbi added, "Celebrities and unknowns alike could be removed or reviewed at the behest of a political party." One famous name that the DNC targeted was conservative actor James Woods.
Twitter's new CEO Elon Musk has announced part two of the Twitter Files will drop Saturday, along with a Q&A about the information. According to Taibbi, future Twitter Files will focus on "shadow-banning, boosting, follower counts, the fate of various individual accounts, and more" Have comments? Share them below.
