On Tuesday, Chicago residents dashed Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot's hope to serve a second term as the Windy City's mayor. With 99% of districts reporting their results, Lightfoot failed to even claim second in the race. Lightfoot won a dismal 17.06% of the vote, finishing third. Meanwhile, former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas declared victory with 33.77% of the vote. Cook County Commissioner Brandon Johnson finished second, earning 20.29%. Late Tuesday evening, Lightfoot called Vallas to concede defeat. Speaking to a crowd of supporters after the loss, Lightfoot said: “Obviously, we didn’t win the election. But I stand here with my head held high and my heart full of thanks." While speaking with press, however, Lightfoot seemed to contradict her own message. When asked by a reporter if she had been treated unfairly in the race because of her skin tone & gender, Lighfoot replied: “I’m a black woman in America. Of course.”

Vallas took advantage of Chicago's skyrocketing crime under Lighfoot, stressing the importance of restoring law and order to the city. In his Tuesday evening speech, Vallas told supporters: “Public safety is the fundamental right of every American. It is a civil right, and it is the principle responsibility of government. We will have a safe Chicago. We will make Chicago the safest city in America." Lighfoot was elected mayor in 2019. Chicago crime has now risen 55% since 2022 and over 100% since 2021. Lightfoot's failure to reduce crime made her a recipient of bipartisan criticism from all over the United States. Her policies during both the COVID-19 pandemic and the BLM riots of 2020 made her particularly unliked.
