COVID vaccine approval efforts have been stunted following the leave of two head vaccine officials at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA is that branch that authorizes and approves vaccinations for medicinal use, including the approval of the COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, and others. The two staffers leaving are Marion Gruber, director of the FDA’s Office of Vaccines Research & Review, and Phil Krause, OVRR deputy director. Gruber will be leaving at the end of October, and Krause will leave in November. Photo of Marion Gruber, courtesy of End Points News The leaves come as head CDC and FDA officials push for quickened approval of COVID-19 booster shots and vaccine usage for children. The FDA has announced that they would like to have booster shots available by September 20th. The FDA's former acting chief scientist, Luciana Borio, took to Twitter to say goodbye to her past coworkers, saying: "FDA is losing two giants who helped bring us many safe and effective vaccines over decades of public service." A former FDA senior leader told Endpoints News that these officials are angry that the CDC, ACIP, and White House are undermining and rushing FDA work on COVID-19 vaccines. This comes as Israel is facing the highest numbers of COVID-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, despite a 90% vaccination rate. This evidence is leading some to believe that the vaccines are not only failing, but actually causing to disease to spread quicker. The director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research at the FDA, Peter Marks, wrote this memo to his staff: The Informed Youth Vaxx Watch Team is actively monitoring adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccines.
